I mellemtiden forts�tter resten af bandet med at skrive musik til det n�ste album. Med de numre der er skrevet indtil videre, lyder det meget lovende!!!

"THIRD EYE are a progressive metal act from Odense, Denmark. They were formed in 2003 by a group of students at a local music school. One of their teachers joined the band. Their style is a heavy progressive metal along the lines of SYMPHONY X and ANUBIS GATE, but with less focus on power metal and more on groove and thrash elements. They released a demo in 2005 and started working on their debut album in 2008, but it was not released until May 2010.

I got in touch with Michael for the story.

When and by whom was your band born ? Did any of you, past and present members, play in any other bands before joining up in your band ? Why did you choose that name and which bands were you influenced by ?

The band was formed in 2003. I was teaching Music at a school and I had a bunch of really talented pupils. One day I asked Martin Damgaard (drums), Thomas Kuhlmann (guitar) and Andreas Schumann (bass), if they would try out some songs I made, and the songs has never sounded better. The band was a reality. In 2007 Per Johansson (vocals) joined the band and last Simon Krogh (keys) entered in 2009. We all had bands before, and some still have. Simon plays in a Deep Purple cover band called Highway Star, Martin and I played Black Sabbath/Ozzy cover in Sweet Leaf, Thomas had a cover band with pop and rock music and Andreas played in some crazy sailor band. Per was a vocalist for Fate in many years and a lot of other bands as well and also have a band called Ureas with his wife. For my own part, I have played in several bands through the eighties and nineties, among others Prophets of Doom and Northern Empire.

Third Eye was a name I came up with almost immediately after the band started. I took some time thinking it over, but in the end we all agreed that the name matched the music.

We all have different musical influences, but we have a center in prog. Metal. We all like prog bands such as Symphony X, Dream Theater (the older stuff), Scar Symmetry and Opeth to mention a few. But we also like Pantera, Iron Maiden, Dio, Black Sabbath and a lot of other great Metal bands. Many of us like other genres too, from rock to fusion and acoustic music.

How is the metal scene in Denmark now?

The scene is groving very fast, and I must admit that I don�t know half of the bands around, but there is a lot of talent and the scene have never been stronger than it is today.

Volbeat is off course a great eye opener for the rest of the world to Danish metal bands, but also Hatesphere, Mercenary and Mnemic has placed Denmark on the map. What we don�t have a lot of is progressive metal bands. A couple worth mentioning though: Anubis Gate, Beyond Twilight and Pyramaze.

Your debut album Recipe for Disaster was released last year. Please tell us more about this album.

It is an album that has been on its way for many years. Some of the songs are more than 10 years old, but most of the songs were made up to the recording of the album. We worked for a long time with every song till we all were satisfied. It was a strange way we approached the recordings cause we had only heard 5 songs with cue vocals from Per, so when he came and played the songs with vocals we all were blown away. The man just created a wonder! In the eleventh hour we had to let our former keyboard player Rasmus Kostending go. We didn�t know what to do, until Per suggested that we could ask Finn Zierler (Beyond Twilight), who was an old friend of the band, if he wouldlike to play some keys on the album. Finn luckily said yes, and he did some amazing stuff on three songs.The rest of the keyboard was played and composed by Tommy Hansen (Jailhouse Studios) who also had a great feeling for our music, and he also mixed the album. � With great Success!

For those of us unfamiliar with your music; how would you describe you music ?

We try making music that has a story. It is like a journey through darkness, light, evil, joy, sadness and anger and propably much more. We want the music to evolve in the direction that the different parts take us. It is like a painting that we work on until we all are happy with it. If you ask me who we sound like, I would say we are a split between Dream Theater, Symphony X, Psychotic Waltz, Mercyful Fate and Megadeth. But there are a lot of other influences too and if you asked someone else they might give you a whole other description.

You are currently working on your new album. What can we expect from this album?

The 10 songs on Recipe for Disaster are very diverse, and that you will experience on the next album too. I believe it will be a little heavier, maybe a little more odd time feelings. Some songs will be complex and others more straight ahead, but never boring, that we can promise. We try for every song we make to make it its own.

Besides of working on the new album, what is your plans for the immediate future ?

We just had a job with Pretty Maids, then we have some live gigs through the winter supporting Danish act Artillery and then we will see what turns up. We have some folks helping us getting some jobs, and it seems like it�s going in the right direction.

To wrap up this interview, is there anything you want to add to this interview?

Third Eye part ways with Escape Music

WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON A BUNCH OF NEW SONGS FOR THE UPCOMING THIRD EYE ALBUM!!!

A whole lot of awesome riffs and ideas have been thrown into the pot. We are very excited about the new material (and you will be too!) We are working on 10 songs or so, and we can�t wait for you guys to hear the result! Still a rather long way to go though... No releasedate has been put yet, but the new album will be out sometime next year.

Meanwhile - if you haven�t bought our debutalbum RECIPE FOR DISASTER (which won several awards!!!) go and get it!

Sanguine_Sky: Hi Simon! Thank you to you for giving me this interview! To begin, could you tell me the story of Third Eye, the group's inception to today?

Simon: Third Eye is the fruit of the former guitarist of Prophets of Doom and Northen Empire, Michael Bodin. Michael has tried for years to create a prog metal band in Denmark, but without success. Michael has taught a music group at school, including Thomas Kuhlmann (guitar), Andreas Schumann (bass), Martin Damgaard (drums) and Rasmus Kostending (keyboards), who attended. One day, he asked them if they wanted to help him out a few songs, and it never sounded better. That's Third Eye was born.Several singers were auditioned, but five years passed before Michael met by chance Per Johansson. At this point, the singer was finally found. Rasmus left the band and was integrated into the training after that.

Sanguine_Sky: Why the name Third Eye?

Simon: Third Eye is a name that came to Michael when he suddenly realized where we were going with our music. It describes the psychological depth in our music and when he arrived with the name, he would not leave his mind, then he thought that it must be the name of the group and, luckily, the rest of the training also adhered to this idea .

Sanguine_Sky: Let's talk now of the album! How was the recording of "Recipe for Disaster?

Simon: We started recording in spring 2008 and in the rest of the year we have assembled all the titles together, when we had time and room available in the studio.Finally, a year later, we finally started recording. We were at Jailhouse Studios and Tommy Hansen began to create his magic. We used 10 days to mix and Tommy made a great sound, where each instrument has its place!

Sanguine_Sky: How was the songwriting process? Who wrote the lyrics?

Simon: Often one of us had a few riffs, maybe a verse, a solo or a chorus, sometimes 3 at a time when we gather it all until every element has its place, then we recorded, which allowed us to hear the results and so have new ideas. And after long, long time, we were finally satisfied! About the lyrics and vocal melodies, everything was written by Per Johansson.

Sanguine_Sky: How long took the tape?

Simon: One year.

Sanguine_Sky: Now that the album is available, what are your impressions and feelings?

Simon: Personally, I was a little surprised to see how much effort it took to create an album and to reveal the day and in the minds of our listeners. I guess after all the efforts we have made to release the album, the rest is a cakewalk. It is a very rewarding experience, and seeing all these great reviews from around the world is moving to see how people understand the album. This gives us even more desire to make music for our listeners.

Sanguine_Sky: What are your expectations with Third Eye now?

Simon: We are already working on the second album, simply because we can not help it! It is hoped that "Recipe for Disaster" will break a little ice, suddenly we can build and rely on reviews we received for the album. And of course we all hope that listeners will appreciate the new album as much, if not more than the first!

Sanguine_Sky: If you could tour with the group of your choice, what would it be and why?

Simon: Personally, I would love to tour with a band like Symphony X I admire this group since I am the prog, and it would be a great honor and a huge source of inspiration to work with! And I think our musiquent attract the same audience.

Sanguine_Sky: How is the Danish metal scene?

Simon: The metal scene in Denmark is dominated by death and thrash metal. And thousands of hardcore, too. Groups of prog and power are scarce, and even more good ... When we did concerts around Denmark, we were told many times "Good service! But Denmark is not a place for you guys!". And I think to some extent, true. The public prog and power is never seen in Denmark. Although some may debate the lack of groups making prog and power metal in Denmark, this seems more legitimate to focus on this scene. Virgin soil, so to speak. It is just that the bookers and the public are willing to take the risk of seeing something out of the box of metal from Denmark. I guess we'll see how it goes ...

Sanguine_Sky: What are the bands you like listening to and influence you?

Simon: I have a lot of diversity in my music collection! A complete list of artists who have influenced me over the years would take forever to compile, but this would include Symphony X, Dream Theater (especially between Kevin Moore), Opeth, Beyond Twilight, Frank Zappa, Chick Corea, Deep Purple, The Prodigy, Duran Duran, Uriah Heep, The Dresden Dolls, Nevermore, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Rammstein, Frederic Chopin, Tori Amos, Ben Folds, Edvard Grieg, etc.. Just to name a few.

Sanguine_Sky: Do you play in another band or musical project?

Simon: Yes, in a cover band Deep Purple, Highway Star nominated. I particularly like the sound of the Hammond organ and the playing of Jon Lord, so I do not think I could play without. In addition, the group guys are my friends!

Sanguine_Sky: Do you have a favorite song in "Recipe for Disaster?

Simon: I have many favorite songs in the album but now it is the title track. I love the weird intro riffs and dark break. But in a month or two, I'll probably discover a new song and it became my favorite.

Sanguine_Sky: Are you planning to go on tour?

Simon: No, a large number of factors led us to focus more on writing the second album.It is not our philosophy not to concerts, but right now we have too many new compositions that are built and we want to work:)

Sanguine_Sky: What is your opinion about the current prog scene?

Simon: I think the prog scene is on track these days, although it is not as much as one might expect here in Denmark. The genre has existed for almost 30 years now, and I think it's great to see all the directions he has taken, and also to see that some elected prog metal like Dream Theater or Opeth are trying to popularize it to a wider public, pushing more and more people to listen to such awesome.

Sanguine_Sky: Do you like playing the keyboard while you take your shower? : P

Simon: Wow, that's an interesting question! I still have no water-proof keyboard, so it's a real challenge! But if I have one, of course! I like playing the keyboard anywhere, anytime! :)

Sanguine_Sky: Thank you very much for answering my questions! One last word for fans and for our curious readers? Something in French if you can? :-)

Simon: I find it hard to express my gratitude to all listeners and all the columnists for the great welcome our first album. Try to say it in French I can not! :) But thank you all for your continued support, and we're excited to introduce our new firebrand, you're promised something great!
